Happy Easter! Hopefully you have had a wonderful time with your family. In Belgium we were blessed with weather that is truly un-Belgium like; it was warm and sunny! Just a perfect way to begin the Spring season. It has been so for the past three weeks and we hope it stays that way. We ended this past quarter with a District Meeting hosted by Lodge #113 in Stuttgart, Germany. It was great to see R.W. Eddie L. Harris, Special Assistant to the District Deputy, feeling well after his shoulder surgery. R.W. Harris spoke to us about ensuring the Lodges maintain the Maryland way to do things. For those of you who do not know, Lodge #132, was renamed Eddie L. Harris, Lodge #132, during the last Grand Visitation. At this District meeting R.W. Harris was presented with a Lodge jacket. Of note during this meeting, in support of an initiative brought forth by Ernest W. Lyon, Lodge #107, we pledge, and paid, $100 to support the Special Olympics this year. The Lodge also paid for next year's Bonding Fee, $200. Post the official portion of the meeting, I was approached by members of the District Staff who praised our Lodge for its website as well as for this newsletter. During our last stated communications we sadly bid farewell to our Senior Warden, Bro. James Bridgers. During his time in the West, Bro. Bridgers provided excellent support and advice to the East. Additionally, the SW was always there to travel down to District meetings and partake of the fun and the pain. No doubt that if we wanted to get there fast, Bro. Bridgers would be behind the wheel. James, you will be missed!

As a reminder to all of you, as we near the end of the year, we must look at paying Dues. Take a minute to look at your Dues Card. With very few exceptions, the year indicated is the last year you were current. Next, look at the list of MMs at the end of this newsletter. If your name is NOT listed, you have been dropped for non-payment of dues. If that is your situation, and you wish to continue your affiliation with this Lodge, you must become current and then pay a reinstatement fee of $75.00. The dues are currently $100.00, and have been so for the last two years. Additionally, we ask that you complete the attached Data Sheet to update our records, even if you are not current.

Spring Fling
The Lodge, in conjunction with Marylena White, Chapter #92, O.E.S., held a Spring Fling dance at the SHAPE Events Center (the former I.C. Club to you old-timers). The event was very successful, due in large measure to the work of our small membership. The Brothers and the Sisters worked real hard to get it all done and we thank them for all their work. With the lack of activities in the area, future events like this will prove to be beneficial for the community as well as for the Maryland Masonic PHAmily. Plans are being made to follow this event with others like it as well as things such as a Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament and a Black and White Ball in the fall. With strong participation by the Craft, we may be able to return to the days of hosting the great Comedy Shows put on by the Lodge.

Greetings Brothers! Hopefully you have all recovered from Thanksgiving and are
preparing for the Holiday Season. Hopefully this New Year will bring a refreshing change in our
world and a fruitful future. We have all suffered through these rough times of a constant changing

economy, wherever we may be. That changing economy also touches on the Lodge.
That is how we arrive at this topic for this quarter. The business part of the Lodge is oftentimes transparent to the craft; however, it becomes very clear to you once you sit in the East. We have just paid our taxes and assessments for the last Masonic year, as well as the assessments levied on the Lodge for the first Quarter of this Masonic Year.

Our yearly Taxes and Assessments are as follows:

Total 925.00

Now, where does that money come from? They come from your dues. Out of each member's $100 dues, $37.00 are for these yearly taxes. That leaves the Lodge with $63.00. What is that used for you may ask? Well after the taxes, each Lodge is Assessed for various other items. This year's or rather, last year's assessments so far are $949.00. That amount must come from the remainder of your dues. That means the remaining $63.00 is further reduced by $38.00, leaving us with $25.00. From those $25.00 we must pay for our yearly Bonding Fee as well as purchase supplies and
prepare for activities, whatever they may be. Whatever is left is what is used for community activities.

When a Lodge comes due for these taxes, it is hoped that each and every member of the Craft has paid his dues for
the next Masonic year. When that has not happened then the Lodge either becomes unable to pay it or the Worshipful Master has to pay for those Brothers who are tardy, hoping those funds will come in.

What I am getting to is that we have, on occasion paid for Brothers who have not kept current with their dues.
Things being what they are today, we have no other option than to begin to drop Brothers from the rolls who are not current. This will begin at the end of this calendar year. All Brothers who have not paid their dues for this Masonic year will be dropped from the rolls. Those of you who are not current know who you are. We will email each affected Brother with the official notice.

This newsletter goes out to all the Brothers for whom we have an e-mail addresses for. Along with this you will receive a data sheet that we require you commplete and return to the Lodge Secretary. If you have not paid your dues, include your payment with it. In addition, the Lodge has, as usual, raffle tickets for sale. I am requesting that all Lodge members purchase a block of 30 tickets. A copy of the tickets will also be attached to this newsletter.
Upon the receipt of your payment, we will provide you with the stubs.

As some of you may know, the American presence in Europe is changing day by day. An example of this is the District having to find a new meeting location as the VFW building in Mannheim was closed. At SHAPE we continue to undergo changes as well. One of those changes will be the demolition of the Green Gym, which has been our meeting location with very few options. With the loss of available buildings on SHAPE the lodge may have no other recourse than to pay for a meeting hall. We are not there yet, but we have to plan for the future.

Greetings Brothers! We have just returned from the 43rd Annual District 12 Conference and Grand Lodge Visitation held 4-6 Sep 08, in Viernheim, Germany. This was a great occasion for all. In addition to the great fellowship, we were able to take care of many of our administrative affairs. For this event, I was accompanied by the Lodge Secretary and the Senior Warden. The hosting lodge, Lodge 109, did a great job in setting the affair up. We look forward to the next Grand Visitation which will take place in Italy. Your lodge has slowly and surely progressed over the last year. I would like to ensure you are all aware of our website, wwallen108.wetpaint.com. The site is a work in progress and we expect our new look to be up and running quite soon. You should also be aware of our email address: wwa108@gmail.com. This email will bounce to the personal email addresses of the lodge officers. In this manner you may communicate with all of us at one sole address. This first quarter has been fruitful in that we have raised four new brothers. Please join me in welcoming Bros. Membership Information

Depending upon where you live, you may want to contact a Mason in that state. Prince Hall Lodges can extend invitations to all men, of sound mind and body, at least 18 years of age, who believe in God, and are of good character and repute. Although Prince Hall is predominantly composed of African-Americans, we are open to all races and religious beliefs. Interested in joining? Here is some basic information which should address the question: "Where do I go from here?" What is SO often misunderstood is a simple fact: there are few but important requirements to become a Freemason! While they are stated in slightly different words in various jurisdictions (and a few jurisdictions may have one or two requirements beyond these), they basically are as follows:

Being a man, freeborn, of at least 18 years of age.
Be a citizen of Maryland (unless you are Active Duty Military).
Be of good moral character, and well-recommended;
A personal belief in a Supreme Being;
Ability and dedication to support one's self and family;
Have a sincere desire to conduct yourself in a manner that will earn the respect and trust of others.
Possess a desire to help others through community service and universal benevolence
Decide to become a Freemason of your "own free will and accord".
Be of good mental health and have good control and use of your limbs

These basic principles have been the means of attracting the most highly respected persons to Masonry for over three centuries. Their simplicity confounds and confuses those who see a conspiracy lurking behind every bush; those who want 'religious purity' and those whose own motives are constantly self-oriented. As a result, this quiet fraternity continues - as do its detractors.

If you answered "YES"
you should consider becoming a Mason.

Freemasonry offers much to its members -- the opportunity to grow, the chance to make a difference, to build a better world for our children. It offers the chance to be with and work with men who have the same values and ideals -- men who have answered "YES" to these questions.

WHO IS PRINCE HALL?

Prince Hall is recognized as the Father of Black Masonry in the United States. Historically, he made it possible for Negroes to be recognized and enjoy all privileges of free and accepted masonry.

Many rumours of the birth of Prince Hall have arisen. A few records and papers have been found of him in Barbados where it was rumoured that he was born in 1748, but no record of birth by church or by state, has been found there, and none in Boston. All 11 countries were searched and churches with baptismal records were examined without finding the name of Prince Hall.

One widely circulated rumour states "Prince Hall was free born in British West Indies. His father, Thomas Prince Hall, was an Englishman and his mother a free colored woman of French extraction. In 1765 he worked his passage on a ship to Boston, where he worked as a leather worker, a trade learned from his father. During this time he married Sarah Ritchery. Shortly after their marriage, she died at the age of 24. Eight years later he had acquired real estate and was qualified to vote. Prince Hall also pressed John Hancock to be allowed to join the Continental Army and was one of a few blacks that fought at the battle of Bunker Hill. Religiously inclined, he later became a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church with a charge in Cambridge and fought for the abolition of slavery." Some accounts are paraphrased from the generally discredited Grimshaw book of 1903.

Free Masonry among Black men began during the War of Independence, when Prince Hall and fourteen other free black men were initiated into Lodge # 441, Irish Constitution, attached to the 38th Regiment of Foot, British Army Garrisoned at Castle Williams (now Fort Independence) Boston Harbor on March 6, 1775. The Master of the Lodge was Sergeant John Batt. Along with Prince Hall, the other newly made masons were Cyrus Johnson, Bueston Slinger, Prince Rees, John Canton, Peter Freeman, Benjamin Tiler, Duff Ruform, Thomas Santerson, Prince Rayden, Cato Spain, Boston Smith, Peter Best, Forten Howard and Richard Titley.

When the British Army left Boston, this Lodge, # 441, granted Prince Hall and his brethren authority to meet as a lodge, to go in procession on Saints John Day, and as a Lodge to bury their dead; but they could not confer degrees nor perform any other Masonic "work". For nine years these brethren, together with others who had received their degrees elsewhere, assembled and enjoyed their limited privileges as Masons. Finally in March 2, 1784, Prince Hall petitioned the Grand Lodge of England, through a Worshipful Master of a subordinate Lodge in London (William Moody of Brotherly Love Lodge # 55) for a warrant or charter.

The warrant was granted on September 29, 1784 under the name of African Lodge, # 459 on the register of the Grand Lodge of England by authority of then Grand Master, the Duke of Cumberland, delivered in Boston on April 29, 1787 by Captain James Scott, brother-in-law of John Hancock and Master of the Neptune. Prince Hall was the first Master of the lodge, which was organized one week later, May 6, 1787.

The warrant to African Lodge # 459 of Boston is the most significant and highly prized document known to the Prince Hall Masonic Fraternity. Through it, Masonic legitimacy among free black men is traced, and on it more than any other factor, rests their case. That charter, which is authenticated and in safekeeping, is believed to be the only original charter issued from the Grand Lodge of England still in the possession of any Lodge in the United States. African Lodge allowed itself to slip into arrears in the late 1790's and was stricken from the rolls after the Union of 1813 although it had attempted correspondence in 1802 and 1806. In 1827, after further un-replied communication, it declared its independence and began to call itself African Grand Lodge # 1. It is interesting to note that when the Massachusetts lodges which were acting as a Provincial Grand Lodge also declared themselves an independent Grand Lodge, and even when the present Grand Lodge of Massachusetts was formed by the amalgamation of the two separate lodges, African Lodge was not invited to take part, even though it held a warrant every bit as valid as the others.

The question of extending Masonry arose when Absalom Jones of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania appeared in 1791 in Boston. He was an ordained Episcopal priest and a mason who was interested in establishing a Masonic lodge in Philadelphia. Delegations also travelled from Providence, Rhode Island and New York to establish the African Grand Lodge that year. Prince Hall was appointed Grand Master, serving in this capacity until his death in 1807.

Upon his death, Nero Prince became Grand Master. When Nero Prince sailed to Russia in 1808, George Middleton succeeded him. After Middleton, Petrert Lew, Samuel H. Moody and then, John T. Hilton became Grand Master. In 1827, it was Hilton who recommended a Declaration of Independence from the English Grand Lodge.

In 1869 a fire destroyed Massachusetts' Grand Lodge headquarters and a number of its priceless records. The charter in its metal tube was in the Grand Lodge chest. The tube saved the charter from the flames, but the intense heat charred the paper. It was at this time that Grand Master S.T. Kendall crawled into the burning building and in peril of his life, saved the charter from complete destruction. Thus a Grand Master's devotion and heroism further consecrated this parchment to us, and added a further detail to its already interesting history. The original Charter # 459 has long since been made secure between heavy plate glass and is kept in a fire-proof vault in a downtown Boston bank.

In 1946, the Grand Lodge of England again extended recognition to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge but withdrew it the same year. In 1994, the Grand Lodge of England finally accepted a petition for recognition by Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. "England cited several reasons recognition was witheld," Nicholas B. Locker, Grand Master of Prince Hall from 1992-1994, said in an interview in June 1996. "One was 'territorial boundries,' because the Grand Lodge of England had already recognized the white Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, which shared the same jurisdiction with us. "Another factor was that Prince Hall owed back payment of dues to the Grand Lodge. Back 200 years ago, there were no checks, and often dues for England were put in the hands of sailing ship captains. It was several months before the ships arrived in England, and money was lost. So it wasn't possible to say for sure that Prince Hall paid all his dues."

The ties were arranged to be formalized in June 1996. In its 212 years, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge has spawned over 44 other Grand Lodges. The subordinate lodges receive recognition once their grand lodges are recognized. Today, the Prince Hall fraternity has over 4,500 lodges worldwide, forming 44 independent jurisdictions with a membership of over 300,000 masons whereby any good-hearted man who is worthy and well qualified, can seek more light in masonry.

Prince Hall is buried in a cemetery overlooking the Charlestown naval yard in Boston's north end. His grave is situated near a large tree; his wife's grave is directly behind his. The site is marked by a broken column; a monument erected 88 years after his death by Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Massachusetts. Still today, believers in the Deity and travellers from all walks of life can be seen winding their way to that sacred spot to pay homage at the final resting place of the first Grand Master of the "colored" Grand Lodge of Masons. This great Mason, Statesman, and Soldier, having travelled to that undiscovered country from whos bourne no traveller returns; remains as the pillar of wisdom, strength, and beauty among all masons today.
